SWILT in the Kleine Zeitung newspaper

In modern industry, where thousands of machines work under one roof to manufacture a wide variety of products, the demands on efficiency and coordination are constantly increasing. A promising research project led by Melanie Schranz, which relies on swarm intelligence, could provide the solution to these challenges. “Almost everything in nature can be represented mathematically, usually in a very complex way, as everything interacts with each other in some way and is self-organized,” explains Schranz in an article in the Kleine Zeitung newspaper. By understanding the behavior of swarms in nature, such as that of ants, which cooperate effectively without a central control unit, the researchers hope to be able to apply similar principles to industrial processes. “As a swarm, they are unbeatable! And that’s exactly what we’re trying to transfer to the technical world,” Schranz continues. This innovative approach could not only increase efficiency but also improve reliability in the event of malfunctions, a real milestone for future production facilities.
